Project Description

Accessibly Chic Interiors, LLC is a Washington, DC residential decorating and design practice founded by Bathsheba Philpott. The studio takes on full-home and single-room design, room refreshes and restyling, decluttering and styling, space planning and furniture layout, sourcing, and color and design consultation — all under its own promise: Beautifully Designed. Thoughtfully Lived.

GrayWorks designed and built a dark, editorial portfolio site that treats the studio's work as a gallery in which finished rooms glow. Five portfolio projects — DC Michigan Park, DC Shaw, Baltimore, Laurel, and Tampa — each get their own chapter page, with before/after sliders on the rooms that have a true matching viewpoint and an accessible, keyboard-navigable lightbox across every photo. An AVIF and WebP image pipeline generates multiple widths and inline placeholders from the client's own originals, so those rooms load fast on any connection.

Behind the site sits a custom Next.js and SQLite content management system with a role-scoped admin, letting the studio edit pages, projects, and media without touching code. A spam-hardened contact form routes enquiries to a stored inbox and to SendGrid-delivered mail on a DKIM/SPF/DMARC-aligned domain, while a contrast, focus, and touch-target audit across desktop and mobile returned zero issues, with reduced-motion support throughout. The whole thing ships as a containerized deployment behind a TLS reverse proxy, covered by 41 Playwright tests.

Open Project

A dark, gallery-style editorial shell built so the photography carries the page, with a muted color field sampled from each project's own images rather than an imposed palette. An oversized-type service section and a decisive contact finale give the scroll a clear beginning and end. Motion runs on GSAP over a single Lenis smooth-scroll engine, which is never started for visitors who prefer reduced motion.

Rooms with a genuine matching photo pair get a CSS clip-path before/after slider that works by keyboard, touch, and mouse alike and degrades gracefully with JavaScript off. Where no true matched viewpoint exists, the page shows an honest side-by-side record instead of faking a wipe. Every photo opens in a native dialog lightbox with a focus trap, arrow-key sequencing across the page, three zoom steps, and a full-size open-in-new-tab link.

A Next.js and SQLite content system lets the studio edit pages, projects, media, enquiries, and settings from an admin dashboard, with rich-text editing and drag-and-drop reordering. Logins are protected by bcrypt-hashed passwords and stateful JWT sessions that re-validate against a live session record, so a logout, role change, or deletion takes effect immediately. Two roles ship: full admins, and editors scoped to the sections assigned to them.

Every enquiry is stored in the admin inbox and sent on through SendGrid as a branded notification to the studio and a branded receipt to the visitor, with Reply-To set in both directions. Six anti-spam layers guard the form: a same-origin check, two honeypots, a minimum fill time, a per-IP rate limit, a link-count trap, and optional Turnstile. The domain carries SPF, DMARC, and SendGrid domain-authentication records so outbound mail is DKIM-aligned.
